Essential Travel Tips for Pet Owners

1. Temperature Monitoring System

Using a temperature monitoring system like Waggle can ensure your pet's safety. These devices help you monitor the temperature inside your RV, ensuring it remains comfortable for your pets even when you're not around. We highly recommend Waggle because of its numerous settings, easy-to-use app, and tech support.

2. Portable Drinking Water Bottles, Treats, Poop Bags

Always carry a portable water bowl and treats for your pets during day trips. Hydration and rewards are vital to keeping them happy and healthy. If you have a food-motivated dog, having treats on hand can be helpful to redirect your dog's attention in unfamiliar places where they are not at ease. This next part should go without saying, but sadly, we have seen far too many piles of dog poop on walks with our dogs. Never forget to bring poop bags. It's essential to clean up after your pets, especially in public places, to maintain cleanliness and respect for others. I love this Treat Bag with room for cell phones, poop bags, treats, keys, and portable water bottles. This bag keeps my hands free and has a convenient strap for carrying like a purse, fanny pack, or clip to your pants. https://amzn.to/3ZKLzFM

3. Rattlesnake Training

If you plan to hike with your dog, consider rattlesnake training. This training can teach your dog to recognize and avoid these dangerous reptiles, ensuring their safety during outdoor adventures.

4. Interior Cameras

Install interior cameras in your RV to monitor your pets when you're away. You can check on them and ensure they're comfortable and safe. Space is at a premium in most RVs, so we prefer to have our cameras mounted with adhesive and wireless to maximize our counter space while reducing the use of unnecessary power when we are not present. Adding an exterior doorbell can be useful for communicating when people knock outside your RV door. This will help you communicate with people outside if you have a dog that is protective of your RV and may try snapping at strangers. For that reason, I have linked below the mounting brackets we use as well as the cameras we use to keep an eye on our furbabies when we are away. 5. Employ Dog Sitters

When necessary, employ dog sitters to take care of your pets. This is beneficial for longer day trips or when visiting places where pets are not allowed. Unfortunately, dogs are prohibited on many hiking trails and beaches that you might want to explore, so make sure to check in advance. Having an account with Rover or Wag will allow you to find dog sitters in the area you are visiting to provide care while exploring non-pet-friendly locations. Rover https://www.rover.com/

6. Automatic Generator Starter

Invest in an automatic generator starter to turn on the AC if the power cuts out. This ensures your pets remain relaxed, cool, and comfortable, even during a power outage or if you are boondocking.

7. Spill-Proof Bowl

While traveling, your pets will still need access to water. A standard dog water bowl creates too many opportunities for spillage while in transit. Being in a confined space like an RV can be tricky, and standard bowls are more likely to be bumped into and knocked over. For this reason, we use a spill-proof dog bowl. 8. Outside Blanket and Leashes

Inevitably, many RVers spend hours of their days outside. Our furbabies also want to enjoy the scenery and fresh air with us. We encourage you to carry a blanket or dog bed for them just for this purpose. It is more comfortable for them and keeps them from lying directly on the ground, where they can wind up tracking dirt, bugs, and debris into your RV.

We also recommend leashes specifically for hanging out at your campsite. A leash a little longer than your standard walking leash can give them some freedom to move around the campsite while still under your supervision. It is also essential to consider where you are tying the leash. While it may seem like a good idea to tie it to a door or the outside entrance handle, we do not advise this location. Tying your dog leash to a heavy picnic table, pole, tree, or even a welded-to-the-frame set of RV stairs is less likely to damage your RV if your dog tries to take off.

Pet-Friendly Destinations

Pet-Friendly Camping Sites

Camping with pets can be a fantastic experience. Look for pet-friendly camping sites that offer amenities like designated pet areas, pet-friendly trails, and easy access to water sources. Some campsites have breed restrictions, so we encourage you to review each park's dog rules before booking. This is our first verification before ever booking in RVers pet travel guide recommendations.

Pet-Friendly Hiking Trails

Numerous hiking trails welcome pets. Ensure you choose safe and suitable trails for your pet's fitness level. Always keep your pet on a leash, bring water, and be mindful of wildlife.

Dog-Friendly Beaches

Many beaches are dog-friendly, allowing your furry friends to enjoy the sand and surf. Look for beaches with designated off-leash areas and provide fresh water and shade for your pets.

Dog-Friendly Restaurants

Are you exploring new cities with your pet? Many restaurants now offer dog-friendly patios and even special menus for pets. Check out Bring Fido, Yelp, and Google for pet-welcoming dining options. As a pro tip, you should always call ahead to confirm that wherever you have chosen, it still offers a pet-friendly dining area. Occasionally, some eateries only offer these areas during the warmer seasons.

Before traveling with your furbabies, consider our Rvers Pet Travel Guide recommendations for a more enjoyable journey with your pets.
